*At 86 years old Rockerfeller wrote the above poem that summed up his life. He is the first American billionaire, and his worth was around $663.4 billion back then, by 2007 standards. As kerosene and gasoline grew in importance, Rockefeller's wealth soared, and he became the world's richest man and first American worth more than a billion dollars. Adjusting for inflation, he is often regarded as the richest person in history. Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy with foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education, and scientific research. His work helped eradicate yellow fever and hook worm in the United States. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life. From his very first paycheck, Rockefeller tithed ten percent of his earnings to his church. His contemporaries described him as reserved, earnest, religious, methodical, and discreet. He was an excellent debater, and expressed himself precisely. As a youth, Rockefeller allegedly said that his two great ambitions were to make $100,000 and to live 100 years. Rockefeller died of arteriosclerosis on May 23, 1937, two months shy of his 98th birthday. 1839-1937
